Discover Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from a whole new perspective when you tour the park with a local, interpretive guide. You’ll learn more about the historic events that changed the park and island forever while hiking throughout the park’s gorgeous natural landscape. Description

Begin your adventure with a scenic drive over the stark and beautiful saddle road before a quick stop at the Maunakea Recreation Area for snacks, a stretch to set the stage for the day overlooking mesmerizing views. From there you will head straight to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

"Hidden Craters Hike"

I had such an amazing experience on the Hidden Craters Hike. From hiking up the slopes of Hualalai, climbing down into a lava tube, the birds, Ohia and Koa trees to the cloud forest and descending down the whole trips was breathtaking and so tranquil. Mel was such an awesome guide. She was so knowledgeable, respectful to the Hawaiian culture and conscious of the preservation of the land and birds. I would highly recommend this tour.

This was, by far, one of the best activities we have done on the Big Island! We have hiked Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on our own but having a guided tour of Hualalai made the experience even more spectacular. We would recommend this hike to anyone who is truly interested in the history, geography and cultural background of the Big Island.

How much hiking do we do?
You’ll hike for approximately 2-3 miles at a location determined by park conditions that day.

Will we get to see active lava?
Although there are currently no active eruptions in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and on Kilauea Volcano, active lava viewing conditions change daily or even hourly. Therefore, lava sightings cannot be guaranteed.

How long is the tour?
The entire round trip tour is approximately 12 hours long.

Is hotel transportation included?
Yes. Please see the instructions on your tickets for arranging transportation.

What should I wear and bring?
Please wear comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate attire, and a light jacket. Bring your tickets, phone, a water bottle, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Tour operators provide walking sticks, flashlights, day packs, warm wear, helmets, and rain ponchos.
