"Royal Kona"

This is a lovely property with seamless check-in, easy parking and many wonderful amenities on the property. We used it for a half day stay between mandatory check out at our condo and a late night flight departure. Restaurant food quality was good, sunset view excellent, room adequate and well appointed. We appreciated the lack of noise in the area other than the pounding waves and music from the luau.

Don the beachcomber used to have the best fish n chips I’ve ever had and they completely removed it from the menu. They used to have open seating and changed it to hosted seating so now you have to wait forever to be seated for lunch. The view is nice, the rooms are minimal. Not a lot of amenities for a ‘resort’, overall a let down from previous visits.

We were there for my nieces wedding, the hotel is older but very nice, clean, good food and drinks. The service was amazing from the front desk, behind the scenes staff, restaurant, pool, room staff, all excellent!

"What happened?"

As a local, I have been staying at the Royal Kona since 1995 when the rooms where barely $200. They had a fabulous breakfast buffet and it was BOGO for the guests. Then, the prices went up, the lagoon though, was still not crowded and wild. The staff super friendly and fun. Last time I was there, during the pandemic they were "remodeling". Fast forward to this week: nothing of what this hotel used to be...is there anymore. The pool attendant is super rude and yells at you if you try to move the beds. (years ago the towels were given inside the gift shop there was NO pool attendant) There is no priority for the hotel guests to get a sit at the bar, vs the outside guests (so what is the point of staying at the hotel?) and the staff is rude. Aestetically, the "event office" that once used to be pristine, Japanese style clean looking, is a mess visible from the outside. The renovation didn't happen on the main tower, so for the price one still gets a room that is stuck in the 90s at best. What happened to the charm, laid back atmosphere that made this hotel unique? Why is the personnel so short staffed, rude and with no Aloha for the hotel guests? I will take my money elsewhere and I encourage you to do the same.
