Description

Discover the beauty of the Big Island's northwestern coast on the Kohala Waterfalls Adventure, a guided exploration of lush valleys, cascading waterfalls, and rich Hawaiian history. This full-day tour features a fun off-road ride, a leisurely hike through a private nature reserve, a refreshing swim beneath a waterfall, and a scenic picnic lunch.

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive through the charming plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau, home to the iconic King Kamehameha statue. Travel along the North Kona and Kohala coastlines, passing over lava flows from Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and the Kohala Mountains. Along the way, keep an eye out offshore for spinner dolphins or, during the winter months, breaching humpback whales.

Take a brief rest stop at the historic Kohala Mule Station, offering sweeping coastal views, before heading off-road in a 4x4 touring van on an old cane road over private ranchland to an exclusive trailhead. From here, enjoy a leisurely hike to breathtaking waterfalls and dramatic views of the Polulu Valley. Cool off with a swim beneath one of the waterfalls, or simply relax and soak in the natural beauty around you.

The adventure includes a private picnic lunch from a scenic overlook. Walking sticks, day packs, rain jackets, and bug repellent are provided. Please bring your own reusable water bottle.

We took the Summit & Stars tour. From the moment of our pick-up in Kona until the drop off 10 hours later, our guide Jason was fantastic. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and welcomed all questions. He was very accommodating with my husband's mobility needs. We saw a gorgeous sunset from the mountain top followed by star gazing. We appreciated the small group size and dinner was good. We highly recommend this trip.

I took this tour on Monday March 10, 2025. It's a memorable and unique tour. Our weather and visibility was not ideal on this day, otherwise would be 5 stars. Our tour guide was patient and knowledgable, especially in astronomy and helped us find and know what we were looking at during our stargazing which took place at the 9200' level. Seeing the telescopes, the view from the summit, though limited by visibility, and being on top of Muna Kea in all its grandeur was quite an experience-thanks Hawaii Forest and Trail!

This was really a special night out star gazing and great for budding astronomers and your average adventurers alike. Our guide impressed with his local knowledge, understanding of the night sky, and unique, Hawaiian cultural interpretations of the stars. Worth every penny.
