Description

Enjoy an unforgettable day exploring the birds, wildlife and a native forest in this Hakalau Forest Reserve Bird Watching Adventure with an expert birding guide.

Hakalau means "many perches" and the Hakalau Forest in Hawaii is still considered a critical rainforest bird habitat today. Nestled high above the island’s shoreline, the dense rainforest of Hakalau is home to some of the world’s rarest plants and animals.

You will hit the backroads of the Hakalau National Forest Reserve in a 4WD Mercedes Sprinter. These vehicles are ideal for birdwatching tours because they are designed for smaller groups and have a rugged construction that allows access to off-the-beaten-path locations.

During this Hawaii birding tour, you will experience the island’s natural beauty and discover rare and native plants. With the help of interpretive field guides, you will search for rare and endangered birds like the Amakihi, Elepaio, Akepa, Akiapolaau and Iiwi, as well as rare animals including carnivorous caterpillars and happy-faced spiders. Learn why these vulnerable habitats have been threatened to the brink of extinction.

We took the Summit & Stars tour. From the moment of our pick-up in Kona until the drop off 10 hours later, our guide Jason was fantastic. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and welcomed all questions. He was very accommodating with my husband's mobility needs. We saw a gorgeous sunset from the mountain top followed by star gazing. We appreciated the small group size and dinner was good. We highly recommend this trip.

I took this tour on Monday March 10, 2025. It's a memorable and unique tour. Our weather and visibility was not ideal on this day, otherwise would be 5 stars. Our tour guide was patient and knowledgable, especially in astronomy and helped us find and know what we were looking at during our stargazing which took place at the 9200' level. Seeing the telescopes, the view from the summit, though limited by visibility, and being on top of Muna Kea in all its grandeur was quite an experience-thanks Hawaii Forest and Trail!
