Description

Welcome to Hadestown, where a song can change your fate. This acclaimed new musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today… and always.

Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.

Recommended for ages 8 and up. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

"A modern Broadway masterpiece—intimate, powerful, and unforgettable"

Hadestown is a stunning example of modern Broadway at its very best. Built around the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, the show tells a timeless love story—one that moves from hope to heartbreak—as Eurydice descends into the underworld and Orpheus follows, determined to bring her home. What makes Hadestown especially mesmerizing is how much it accomplishes with what is essentially a single set. Through the clever use of turntables, platforms, and subtle transformations, the stage continuously evolves, capturing multiple locations and emotional states in ways that feel surprising and beautiful. The set never feels static—it breathes with the story. One of the great strengths of this production is its consistency. Over its many years on Broadway, Hadestown has seen numerous cast changes, including well-known performers and understudies alike. In my experience, the power of the show doesn’t hinge on any one performer. The material itself is so strong that the story lands regardless of who is currently in the roles. If you find yourself with the opportunity to see Hadestown, go—no matter who’s listed above the title. The onstage band is another standout element. Visible throughout the entire show, the musicians become part of the storytelling itself. This relatively small ensemble delivers an enormous musical impact, and watching them perform adds another layer of intimacy and emotion to the experience. The score is gorgeous—haunting, soulful, and deeply narrative-driven. These may not be familiar “sing-along” tunes for first-time listeners, but the music pulls you in quickly. The ensemble plays a critical role here as well, shaping the world of the show through movement, harmony, and atmosphere. If you’re a Broadway fan, Hadestown is essential viewing. If you’re not, and you only have time for a handful of shows, I’d recommend pairing this with a large-scale spectacle—something big and traditional—and then seeing Hadestown as the more intimate, contemporary counterpoint. It represents where Broadway is today, and where it’s headed. We saw the show from partial-view box seats purchased a few weeks in advance for around $99, and it was an excellent value. While we missed a small portion of the staging, we were still able to see and feel about 90% of the show—and the experience was absolutely worth it. Thoughtful, beautifully designed, and emotionally resonant, Hadestown is a show that stays with you long after the curtain falls.

"Not Worth Watching"

We watched Hadestown in Lyric Theater in West End, London. We always watch shows both on Broadway and in West End. This is the worst musical and most overrated show I have ever seen. My entire group fell asleep within 5 minutes into the show…and so were the people few seats from us. Hermes character was a better fit as Ursula in Little Mermaid. The execution of the build-up of the story & the characters didn’t get across very well to make the storyline convincing: Orpheus and Eurydice didn’t seem to be in love; there is no perception of Hades’ powers and might to effectively oppress his people; did Orpheus & Eurydice, walked back very far? It didn’t seem to be; is Hadestown down below or up above the stairs? I wouldn’t know if I do not know the story because the set didn’t portray it well; did Hades really miss Persephone? It didn’t seem like it, she was just away for a few seconds; why did Orpheus look at Eurydice, it was a simple instruction…if there was a compelling reason, it was not obvious in the show. There is a reason why the lights keep on pointing to the audience…to keep them awake during this Matrix/Star Wars/New Orleans/wanna be Greek Myth adaptation. It is a MUST NOT SEE show. Save your money for a better one.

By far the worst broadway show I've ever seen. Repetitive music, partly weak voices, underwhelming dancing, most boring storyline. Absolutely not to recommend. Go see Hamilton, Hell's Kitchen, Book of Mormon, etc. and you'll get way more bang for your buck.

"Checked out by the interval. Utterly blown away by the end!"

One of the strangest, most memorable and brilliant theatre experiences I can remember. I’ve been meaning to check this one out for a while. I loved the look and vibe of it and blues and jazz appeals to me. Before going I’d read some reviews which were mostly glowing but some people just didn’t get on with it and found it difficult to get on with. For the first half I was firmly in the latter camp. I just didn’t connect with any of it. It was slow and meandering with not a great deal going on. It just seemed aimless. I’d checked out by the interval. But then the second half got underway and it all clicked. Without giving anything about the plot away, I was blown away by the power of the story telling, performances which were so great and filled with passion and conviction, and the music, my word it was up there with the very best. It’s as good as it gets. It was an emotionally beautiful and gut wrenching experience and by the curtain call I was reminded of the transportive power of theatre and just how profound it can be.
