Electric bikes are not necessary but very helpful! They are pedal-assist bikes that give you a boost as you go uphill/while you ride. It is certainly doable without the electric bike, but there are very few hills along the way. Those who use an electric bike will be able to zip up the hill with no problem!
Most people ferry as the 2-mile downhill into Sausalito from the Golden Gate Bridge is uphill on the way out!
Normally there are ferries running 7 days a week back from Sausalito and Tiburon multiple times a day. During COVID-19, the ferry runs Friday-Sunday at 12:30, 2:30, and 5:30 pm. Visit the Sausalito Ferry website for more information on their operating hours.
Ferry tickets are available for purchase at their facilities' shop counters, and are recommended to save time at boarding. That said, tickets can always be purchased on the boat in either Sausalito or Tiburon. A ferry ride is $16.
