Description

Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum is housed in the elegant 1819, William Scarbrough House - designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974, for its historic significance and exceptional Regency architecture. Within this notable setting, Ships of the Sea exhibits ship models, paintings, and maritime antiques, principally from the great era of Atlantic trade and travel during the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum also endeavors to interpret the rich story of Savannah's illustrious maritime history, a chronicle which includes the groundbreaking Steamship Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The museum is surrounded by an entire city block of grounds which comprise the largest private garden in the Historic District. Careful attention has been paid to the plant and surface materials. With few exceptions, all plant material is native or has been available since the early to mid-1800s. During a walk around the grounds one can experience the historic plantings offered by the original Georgia Trustees, a citrus stand, a Trident maple grove, a vine-covered pergola, and a belvedere with a splendid view. Many of the plantings are accompanied with placards bearing barcodes. When scanned with a smart device, a whole host of knowledge can be gleaned about the plant’s properties.

The combination of elements offered at Ships of the Sea provides something for everyone, especially for those curious about the history and culture of this great region. Savannah was built on the commodities of its maritime connections. The streets were paved with discarded ballast stones, the city’s magnificent homes were built by wealthy Merchant Princes who earned their fortunes through Atlantic trade, and renowned River Street was home to cotton factors who shipped their goods to northern and international ports. So discover what made Savannah, Savannah, at Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum!

I looked forward to seeing this museum because it's housed in a historic home I've read about in historical fiction. It never worked into our plans on previous trips to Savannah but our daughter and son-in-law work for the Department of the US Navy and our son-in-law is a military history buff so we made this a priority for our day in Savannah. Unfortunately, my daughter and I have health issues that made it impossible for us to see the upper floors due to the number of stairs and lack of accessibility. Thankfully, the staff was very accommodating to help us use the motorized lift from the ground level to the main floor so we were able to see some of the museum but it was still disappointing. Other family members enjoyed the museum and were able to take photos and video chat so I could "see" the upper floors. What I could see of the museum was very interesting and the restoration of the house seems excellent.

Must see for anyone that loves ships and model ships. The docent at the entrance was hilarious, and the 15 foot titanic model was incredible!

Interesting museum on the far edge of the historic district. When walking you have to be a little extra careful using the crosswalks over the busy road, and there is a parking lot if you choose to drive. We, too, were initially confused once we entered the garden. But it is sort of obvious you’re meant to follow the path and enter the back of the house just like any other Savannah home tour. Large collection of ship models with incredible detail. The artist must have spent a lifetime building them! Came away learning a bit about something we knew nothing about. Fun collection of ship figureheads and brass (?) compasses. Fun display of ships in a bottle. A wheelhouse in the basement and some displays of items from onboard ships. Use the flashlight on your smartphone to peer into the models and cutaways. The house, lacking some original features, makes good use of the space. Beautiful restoration. The docent was eager to talk about the house and the models. The garden was not what I expected. More of an event space. The old weather kiosk is pretty. We paid for the pass to visit this museum and two other homes - Davenport and Andrew Low. $30 apiece for all 3, which is a great deal and helped us narrow down our choices.

You don't necessarily have to be a maritime enthusiast to enjoy this museum. It is housed in a beautiful historic home and the displays cover many rooms and floors. There are several guides around to answer questions. There's artwork and ships in bottles and the architecture of the building adds to the delight and there is a garden on the property as well. It's appropriate for all ages.

The displays here are phenomenal in their detail. Most notably the Titanic. But other ships are also reproduced with great detail, including cut-a-ways that allow you to see inside the ship. We were a bit put off by how difficult it was to find an entrance into the museum. Renovations were being done on the front entrance, so we had to enter by the back through the garden. Signage was poor and we had to ask nearby workers for directions.
