"More for enthusiasts, but a good stop"

If you're not a fan of military aircraft, this place probably won't ring a bell. Most interesting are the bullet marks in the windows of the old hangar, caused by Japanese planes during the raid on Pearl Harbor - truly a touch of history. In the exhibition itself you will find some nice pieces from WWII like the F4F Wildcat, SBD Dauntless or the Japanese A6M Zero. A rarity is the trainer aircraft on which future President George H.W. Bush trained. The old hangar was under renovation at the time of my visit, with newer jet fighters on display on the tarmac. Honestly - I've seen better aviation museums and the price of admission seemed quite high. But if you don't mind, you can stop here when you take the shuttle back from the USS Missouri, which is much more interesting. There is, however, a good museum self-service restaurant with Hawaiian food that I recommend

"Nice Museum for WW2 History Fans"
TripAdvisor user rating 4.0 out of 5

For those who are WW2 history fans, this is a nice museum. While I would consider the USS Arizona Memorial, and the USS Missouri as higher priority sites to visit, this museum makes for a nice stop if you have time or have seen the other two. The museum has several WW2 fighters and bombers in its hanger and more modern aircraft displayed outside. The included audio guide was very helpful. Note that like the USS Missouri, this museum is located on Ford Island. You can park in the same lot as the USS Arizona Memorial and take the same shuttle bus as the USS Missouri. Bags were not permitted, and you had to check them before boarding the shuttle. The signs mentioned no “large cameras”, but no one stopped me from bringing my full frame DSLR. No photos were allowed while riding the bus as it was an active military base, but there were no photography restrictions once at the museum or on its grounds. There was also a cafe and gift shop in the museum.

We had a private tour led by a guide who explained all the exhibits in the main building. The collection is very nice, but small. We combined it with a tour to the control tower next door which is a must see.

"Expensive "

This museum is small and expensive. You can get there by taking the free shuttle from the national memorial. There are also planes outside of the museum to see, but it's still rather expensive for what you see.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Aviation Museum, being a history devotee. Out of all the Pearl Harbor exhibits, it was probably my least favorite only because I love nautical history so much. That being said it is like choosing your least favorite dessert. Amazing to experience

"Amazing Control Tower Tour"
TripAdvisor user rating 5.0 out of 5
Reviewed November 07, 2024
We made it a point to get to the Aviation Museum this trip. We booked a tour of the Control Tower prior to going through the museum/exhibit area. The Tower was a highlight of our time here! Our tour guide was outstanding! He was so knowledgeable (wish I remembered his name) and no matter how many books read/movies you have seen, you will learn so much on this tour. It was great to stand in tower and look around 360 degrees and see the entire island. We really got a great understanding of the different flight paths of the attack on Pearl Harbor and such an appreciation for what our troops went through that day. We learned of the positions of the battle ships in the harbor that day and can see where some of them sank. Picture taking is somewhat limited from tower since the island is an active-duty military base. It was such a clear day when we were there, and we could see for miles! After our tower tour we spent a couple of hours touring the big hanger area and all the exhibits and aircraft outside. Impressive. Also saw bullet holes in windows & hanger from the attack. Recommend spending several hours here.

As a former military dependent, I was super interested in this particular piece of the Pearl Harbor complex. There were a lot of aircraft to view - some in hangars, some outside. There is also a mix of crafts representing the US Air Force, U. S. Naval and other countries. The flight simulators were occupied and had lengthy lines of children waiting to “fly,” so we skipped that. The museum is also informative about the role of aviation in WWII, specifically the Pacific front. The Passport to Pearl Harbor also grants you access to the USS Bowfin and the related Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, and the Battleship Missouri. The website also lists the USS Oklahoma Memorial but we didn’t visit it. We enjoyed the Passport as we got to see so many things.

While at Pearl Harbor we decided to check out the aviation museum. Some very cool planes and the only place to see a real Japanese zero. The planes span decades of military aviation. There is also a Disney pavilion which shows how cartoons portrayed the war. If you have time this is good to check out, but I don't think it is a must see.

There are a lot of historic planes on display here. Hangar 79 really doesn't have much to offer. The Disney tent displays how art was used in the war effort. Pro Tip: Don't forget your watter bottle, which must be left at the tent entrance, when leaving the area.

The aviation museum is neat! It starts with a short video about Pearl Harbor and airplanes back in World War II. There are many full size World War 2 era planes displayed in one of the hangers. (One of the main reasons my mom and I went to this museum was because my maternal grandfather had been a tail-gunner in World War 2.) There are some other World War 2 pilot memorabilia displayed in the hanger along with a flight simulator you can get tickets to participate in, a small restaurant, and a gift shop. Other than that, they had a whole lot of more modern helicopters, jets, and airplanes outside the main hanger for people to walk around and look at. My favorite part was probably this small amazing exhibit they had about Walt Disney and World War 2 which talked about various Disney employees in World War 2, showed Disney World War 2 art, and had some military World War 2 Disney shorts playing. Also they had an Oscar Disney had won for one of their pro-US World War 2 shorts displayed. Overall, it was worth the price of admission, but it was a relatively short stay at the museum.

"The least interesting in Pearl Harbor"
TripAdvisor user rating 3.0 out of 5

Despite a huge historical importance due to 7 Dec 1941 Japanese attack, this aviation museum was the least interesting for me in Pearl Harbor area. Maybe, because I saw many such museums, and at the same time - this was the last of all 3 museums I've visited that day. For sure, the USS Missouri left the strongest impression, then USS Arizona memorial and even the Bowfin submarine I found more interesting. The display of historic aircraft was nice, but most authentic were the bullet wholes which recalled my memories from movies I watched.
