Overview

Step onto the historic grounds of the Oak Alley Plantation situated on the legendary River Road. Built in 1837–39, the tour explores the Big House—an architectural feat with 28 live oak trees leading to it, enormous gardens, historical exhibits on the 200 years of the people of Oak Alley, and more. The plantation is nothing short of mesmerizing!

Good To Know

Enjoy a 40-minute tour of the scenic Oak Alley Plantation, including the historical exhibits and gardens.
Hotel pick-up is available from most New Orleans, Metairie and Kenner hotels. The shuttle will also stop at Cajun Pride Swamp Tours for a transfer to the plantation.
The plantation is approximately 1 hour away from New Orleans, depending on traffic.
Eating and drinking are allowed on the grounds adjacent to the parking lot, and a restaurant is available onsite.
Bring a camera to capture your exploration, but please note that photography is not allowed inside the Big House.
Fun for all ages. Children three (3) years old and below can tour for free, but please note that parents with overly active children must take turns visiting the Big House exhibit.
The plantation grounds are wheelchair-accessible. However, the second floor of the Big House exhibit can only be accessed through the stairs. An iPad tour of the upstairs exhibit is available in the media room.
Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Description

Visit Oak Alley Plantation and learn the history and lore behind this historic New Orleans plantation situated on the legendary River Road. Enjoy the beauty, adventure, and architecture of the "Big House" and the famous alley of 28 evenly paced Live Oak trees that are believed to be at least 100 years older than the home.

Oak Alley Plantation was built in 1837–39 on the west bank of the Mississippi River and its historic grounds and exhibits reflect the evolution of this National Historic site.

The 40-minute tour is professionally guided and conducted by guides in period costumes. Please note that while photography is not permitted inside the mansion, visitors are encouraged to take photos on the balcony.

This tour was amazing and Eric our tour guide was really knowledgeable. I highly recommend this tour. We even saw some alligators as the weather was really warm

The swamp was incredible, we saw so many alligators and raccoons and our tour guide Dustin was really funny. The best part was definitely getting to hold a baby alligator. overall, it was a really fun time

We had a great time with Captain Dustin leading our way through a Louisiana swamp tour. He was full of information about the Louisiana swamp and its inhabitants and his microphone system worked very well. We saw plenty of alligators and enjoyed Captain Dustin's unique way of calling the gators to the boat to be fed. We were a group of about 40, but everyone had a good view and when there was something special to see, Dustin turned the boat around so that everyone had an opportunity to see the view. There is also an impressive gift store on the site to enjoy after the tour.

Is transportation included?

Yes, hotel pick-ups are available from most New Orleans, Metairie and Kenner hotels, and begin at 12:30 pm. Please call the number on your e-ticket to confirm if the shuttle service is available from your hotel. Please note that the shuttle will also stop at Cajun Pride Swamp Tours for a transfer to the plantation. You will enjoy about 30 minutes of free time on the Cajun Pride grounds before departing for the plantation tour.

Can we eat or drink on the shuttle?

There is no eating or drinking permitted in the shuttle vans. However, there are picnic tables at the Cajun Pride Swamp Tours location and limited snack options available for purchase in their gift shop. There are also picnic tables available for use on the grounds adjacent to the parking lot of Oak Alley Plantation.

Can I take pictures while on the tour?

Yes, but please note that photography is not allowed inside the Big House exhibit.

What should I wear?

It is best to wear casual attire and comfortable walking shoes.

What if it rains?

The plantation tour is offered rain or shine unless canceled due to extreme weather conditions. Plantation tours are also mostly indoors, but please bring your umbrella for the walk from the shuttle service to the plantation complex.

How much walking is involved?

The plantation tour involves some walking, but not a great distance. It is recommended that visitors with mobility difficulties come prepared with their own assistive devices, like wheelchairs and walkers.

Is the tour wheelchair-accessible?
