VISIT FLAMINGO GARDENS

BOTANICAL GARDENS
The Wray Botanical Collection and Arboretum at Flamingo Gardens consists of 15 acres with over 3000 tropical and sub-topical plants and trees. The Arboretum is home to 15 "Champion" trees, the largest trees of their species as designated by the Florida Forest Service, including the largest single-trunk tree in the Florida. Specialty gardens include the Croton Garden, Butterfly Garden, Hummingbird Garden, Florida Wildflower Garden, Bromeliad Garden, and Children's Garden.

EVERGLADES WILDLIFE SANCTAURY
The Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary at Flamingo Gardens provides residence to permanently injured and non-releasable birds and animals. It has the distinction of being the largest collection of Florida native wildlife in the State with over 85 native species including alligators, bobcats, panthers, otters, eagles, peacocks, and, of course, flamingos. It also contains one of the largest free-flight aviaries in the country and one of the premier River Otter breeding programs.

WRAY HOME MUSEUM
The centerpiece of the gardens is a natural hammock of 200-year-old Live Oak trees dripping with species orchids and epiphytes. Amid the trees is the historic Wray Home Museum, built-in 1933 by Floyd L. and Jane Wray as a weekend retreat. It is the oldest residence in Broward County west of University Drive. The building was restored in 1991 to depict a typical South Florida country home of the 1930s and is open to the public with guided tours from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm seven days a week.

WILDLIFE ENCOUNTER SHOWS
Live presentations featuring several of Florida’s native wildlife, such as birds of prey, small mammals, and reptiles, with interesting facts about the species and their relationship to the environment

NARRATED TRAM TOURS Available on a first-come serve basis at the park.
Take a narrated tram ride through the back 46 acres consisting of a mitigated tropical rainforest, wetlands area, and a native hammock including some of the last natural jungle growth in South Florida. The tour is fully narrated, lasting approximately 25 minutes.

We had a late flight out of Fort Lauderdale Airport and searched for a way to spend the day. We chose this place based on reviews. We enjoyed our day. We saw many birds and other animals. We watched a live show and rode on a tram tour. There was a food truck where we had lunch. Since it was a weekday, the crowds were low. Overall, a nice way to spend a few hours.

"You can hand feed the flamingos"

This place felt like more of a bird sanctuary rather than a botanical garden. I guess it’s technically supposed to be both, but mostly just saw a bunch of different types of birds. We went on a Thursday in July- pretty busy and extremely HOT. There is some shade, but not enough for hot July. These birds are stinky too. The highlight of my trip was getting to feed the flamingos. When you purchase your tickets at the desk they ask if you want to pay an extra $1 for flamingo food- yes, you DO want to do that- it was the best thing I did there. I just put some food in my palm and held my hand flat- they gently nibbled it right out of my palm. Nope, didn’t hurt at all and got some cute pictures and videos of it. Check that one off the old bucket list: hand fed a flamingo.. Check! Also, I was hangry so we decided to grab a soft pretzel from their little cafe there. Mistake. I think they meant to call it “3 day old, hard as a rock, inedible pretzel”. So I don’t recommend eating there. Overall, It is a bit of an overpriced attraction- we would’ve probably had a better time if it was cooler.
