See whales in the wild! Located just 30 minutes from Seattle, Island Adventures’ Everett Gray Whale Tour takes guests through the calm protected waters of Possession Sound, Saratoga Passage, and Port Gardner Bay aboard the Island Explorer 5, a high-speed catamaran. The tour focuses on migrating gray whales, gentle giants the about the size of a school bus. While the primary focus of this Seattle whale watching tour are gray whales, guests will also have an opportunity to see seals, sea lions, eagles, osprey, seabirds, and other marine wildlife. The Island Explorer 5 features an outside rail viewing space and an indoor heated seating area for all guests, and three viewing decks for the best possible vantage point over the water.

Description

Each spring provides one of the best opportunities for whale watching in Washington. More than 20,000 gray whales migrate along the west coast each year. A small group, known as the "Sounders", are drawn to the abundant ghost shrimp of Puget Sound where they feed before continuing on their journey. A skilled naturalist will teach you to identify individual whales that have returned to this area for decades.

While it is possible to see other whale species on occasion, the primary focus of the special Everett tours is gray whales, gentle giants roughly the size of a school bus! In addition to the gray whales, guests will also view seals, sea lions, eagles, osprey, seabirds, and more.

Departing from Everett, guests will explore the calm protected waters of Possession Sound, Saratoga Passage, and Port Gardner Bay while enjoying the comfortable accommodations aboard the Island Explorer 5. Island Adventures has been offering spring gray whale tours since 2006. This program boasts the highest success rate - 99.5%!

Infants aged 0-1 require a ticket that must be purchased at the venue.

When is whale watching season in Seattle?

It depends on what you want to see! You can see whales at any time of year, and the vessels move to different locations throughout the year to optimize our chances. The spring tours from Everett are best for gray whales, summer and fall are historically best for humpbacks, orcas, and minkes, and the winter, while not necessarily peak season, still offers plenty of opportunity for seeing a variety of different whales.

What should I wear?

Visitors are encouraged to dress in layers, even in summer. The air temperature often feels 10-20 degrees cooler than the water. Island Explorer vessels have large heated cabins and wind-blocked outdoor seating, but the more comfortable you are, the more time you'll spend viewing wildlife!

Where is it located?

This tour departs in Everett, Washington, only 30 miles north of Seattle. Check-in directly at the vessel docked on Guest Dock 3: 402 14th Street, Everett, WA 9820.

Is the tour appropriate for children?

Yes, this is a family-friendly tour.

Is the tour wheelchair/stroller accessible?

A small folding stroller that can be stowed easily is allowed. Please be mindful not to block walkways or doorways for safety reasons. Many of our guests with young children find it most convenient to wear their infants or use a car seat carrier. The Tour can accommodate almost any situation, however, there are a few limitations. At this time, the tour cannot accommodate electric wheelchairs, and a few stairs are required to board the vessel. All of the vessels have restrooms, indoor and outdoor viewing, and cafe service on the main floor, but due to a few Coast Guard requirements, the vessels cannot be fully ADA-compliant. Please contact the Island Adventures office with specific questions.

Can I bring my camera?

Yes, lots of photo opportunities.

How long is the tour?

Tour duration is approximately 2 hours.

Can I bring my own food/beverages?

The vessels have great food and drink options available for purchase, but you are permitted to bring your own food and drink items as well. Because we sell beer and wine on our vessels, however, Washington state does not permit any outside alcohol aboard.
