"Beware the school groups"

Beware the students! You might want to check with the hotel directly before booking how many student groups will be staying. Students were everywhere. While mostly polite, this was not always the case. And, forget about having breakfast when you want it. The "herds" will prevent that.

I have stayed at the Woodlands hotel in the past, but this was my first solo trip. Location in relation to Colonial Williamsburg is ideal. Room was spacious and clean, buffet breakfast offered a very good selection and was kept well-stocked. Shuttle bus was very convenient. I had a great stay!!

"Super Friendly Staff Saved the Day!"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5

Friendliest and most helpful hotel staff I've ever come across! They worked hard to make my stay pleasant and iron out all of the details. I stayed with the William and Mary admitted students group, and everything was easy! Even when I had a problem with my room, they switched me over to a new room right away and made sure my stay was pleasant! Would definitely recommend this hotel as a more budget friendly option while still staying close to town and Colonial Williamsburg.

"Clean, walking distance to Colonial Williamsburg."

Three stars because of the location: walking into Colonial Williamsburg without having to touch one's car (or even the free shuttle buses) is a pleasure. Check-in was slow because the desk at this huge hotel was staffed by two people and there was nobody else to answer basic questions. Finding reservations, making keys, etc., took longer than I've experienced in years. The room was clean and well-matched to my family's needs (king suite with a queen sofa bed), including a sink outside the bathroom to facilitate more people getting ready int he morning. The sofa bed equipped with an unimaginably thin mattress (I wasn't expecting a new pillow-top mattress, but this one must have been at least 20 years old), and the king in the master was pretty uncomfortable too. One HVAC unit (at the window in the bedroom) didn't do a great job with the whole suite and turned off and on several times an hour despite conservative settings. Internet service in the room was spotty (worked more reliably near the hallway, but still not great). Breakfast is a nice offering: good variety of choices. The breakfast area was way too small for the size of the hotel, and while you could sit in the lobby or outside areas, there were huge groups checking out in the morning, so the lobby was already overrun. The great benefit to this hotel is being able to walk into the Colonial Williamsburg Visitors' Center just outside the hotel's side door. After this stay, though, I would prefer to spend less money to stay in a modern chain hotel a short drive away: the walk from the parking lot at the Visitors' Center isn't that much longer than the walk from the hotel, and it would get me a better check-in/check-out experience, internet service, seating at breakfast, and comfortable beds.
