my family and i had the most incredible experience staying here because of the people here at this resort. maka who helps run the resort activities was so patient, compassionate and a true embodiment of the aloha spirit. we did the lei making, ukulele class, sunrise ceremony, hula dancing and sunrise yoga. our trip was special because of how welcome we felt and maka made us feel so connected to the hawaiian culture. maka & his wife were two of the most gentle kind hearted souls i’ve ever met.

The hotel was under construction on arrival, I should have done my due diligence so that's on me. That being said, my review does not reflect the construction, but the disrepair of some areas and things that have nothing to do with wear and tear. First, I will say, the room was lovely, quiet, and had a great garden view of the front of the resort. The bed was very comfortable. We were surprised the room didn't get any service for the first 2 days. If trash isn't even going to be taken out, please provide larger trash cans. The restaurant is small, dark and has absolutely no view and no bar to sit at. Meals were quite expensive and portions were smaller than expected. $140 for 2 meals, 2 cocktails and 2 desserts (one meal was a Caesar salad). The pools and beach were beautiful but difficult to get to. The construction meant we had to take the lobby elevator to the third floor, walk thru the building to the next elevator and then take that to the ground level. That was actually fine. What was disturbing is the number of exit doors and stairwells not accessible. They did not seem to have anything to do with the construction going on. We were there during the work week and saw no visible changes to this situation the entire stay. One elevator made a clunk sound everytime it made it to the 2nd floor and the other elevator had a huge scrape mark on one of the doors. Our room's door was difficult to open because it was literally scraping the tile floor when opened and had to be forcibly closed to lock whenever we left. Our floor did not have a working ice machine and one of the vending machines was out of order. The room wrist bands were nice to have for opening the room door and for entering the self parking lot. We were given a room key just for checking out towels. Weird, but okay. But you can only check out towels between 9am and 5pm. So we never did get towels as we hit the road as the sun was rising and came back around sunset, 6:30ish. The outdoor bar closed at 6pm, and food service stopped at 4:30. There are no restaurants within walking distance, except the small one on the property I mentioned already. Our last night there we decided to watch the sunset at the pool with a cocktail. We barely got there in time to get the drinks. No towels available for the pool and I had to ask for a bar mop just to wipe the barstools dry after the recent rain. This trip was for our 30 year anniversary, our first ever visit to Hawaii, and I booked this place because it was on the beach and had a bar/restaurant and a spa. I found out the spa closed last month. And the beach is not safe to swim. I am disappointed that this place was misrepresented to us.

"The Hotel is a Work in Progress"

Never mind the construction issues- There wasn't a working patron elevator - patrons had to use a service elevator. The ceilings in hallways where leaking due to rain We paid a premium price for an ocean view. Our room had torn curtains and dated furnishings. We went and spoke with an attendant at the make shift front desk, and she let us know anything else would be a downgrade. OK. So we asked to at least have the curtains replaced, that never happened. The housekeepers tried to deep clean the room the next day, at our request- but the room just was unclean due to years of neglect. The restaurant was ok. I would not recommend the crab cake Benedict. The positives are the people who work here. The last straw happened when the cockroaches appeared. Not just 1 or 2. I was done. The positive was the staff. Everyone was understanding and tried to keep a smile on in the mist of all of this. They did waive resort fees, parking fees, and our 1 meal at the restaurant. We did tip the staff due to their service and their willingness to try and make our stay as better. I just can not recommend this hotel at this time. 2 out of 5 stars for the staff.

"DECEPTIVE BAIT-AND-SWITCH: Porta-Potties, No Spa, and Staff Directing Guests Through marked DANGER Zones."
TripAdvisor user rating 1.0 out of 5
Reviewed March 21, 2026 NEW
DECEPTIVE BAIT-AND-SWITCH: Porta-Potties, No Spa, and Staff Directing Guests Through marked DANGER Zones. DO NOT BOOK THIS PROPERTY. My family and I booked the "Outrigger Kauai Beach Resort & Spa" expecting the 4-star experience advertised on their website and Expedia. What we were delivered is a hazardous, poorly maintained construction site that fails every basic standard of hospitality, sanitation, and safety. 1. The "Bait and Switch" (Missing Amenities) The hotel explicitly markets a "Hawaiian Rainforest Spa" and an on-site playground. They do not exist. There is no spa facility, and the "playground" is a public park miles away. To continue charging a premium "Resort Fee" while these core facilities are decommissioned is a total misrepresentation of the product. There is also no gym, no business centre, room service or daily room cleaning. 2. Sanitation & Arrival Horror The "Grand Lobby" is a series of plywood tunnels. The most shocking part? The hotel is utilizing outdoor porta-potties as guest restrooms for the check-in and lobby area. For a 4-star property to provide plastic temporary toilets instead of functional indoor plumbing is a gross failure of sanitation and basic dignity for guests. 3. SAFETY NIGHTMARE: Directed Through "DANGER" Zones Because the main guest elevators are non-functional (neglect, not renovations), guest access is a labyrinth. We were first forced into a freight/service elevator detour. Shockingly, hotel staff then recommended a 'shortcut' behind the building to avoid the elevator. I have included photos of this At night, this path is unlit and hazardous. Expecting paying guests, including families, to navigate an unlit, marked danger zone because basic resort infrastructure is broken is unconscionable. 4. Dishonest Disclosures & Disrepair Their fine print claims renovation work happens only on "weekdays." I am writing this on a Saturday, while active construction noise blasts through the property. When confronted, management admitted that work is ongoing through the weekend, directly contradicting their own booking disclosures. Furthermore, the property is in disrepair with flooded corridors, broken doors, and out-of-order ice machines. 5. Bad-Faith Management When we requested a resolution, the hotel attempted a "trap" by offering a refund only if we checked out by 11:00 AM, but they didn't communicate this offer to us until 2:45 PM. This kind of deceptive, bad-faith negotiation proves they are more interested in avoiding responsibility than caring for their guests. Summary: This property is an undisclosed construction site that utilizes porta-potties and directs guests through dangerous service corridors. Save your family’s vacation—book the Marriott or Grand Hyatt instead. This is a hazardous construction zone masquerading as a resort.
