Travel along historic railroad tracks through magnificent redwoods on a Skunk Train Rail Bike. This guided trip begins with a scenic hike down to the Noyo River where your bikes await. Then becomes a 25-mile railbike journey following the river, crossing 12 wooden trestle bridges and stopping for a picnic with ample time to explore before heading back.

Discover a new side of the Redwood Route aboard a custom-built, two-person electric Skunk Trail Rail Bike.

Motor-assisted and virtually silent, these custom-built, patent pending, two-person railbikes will take you breezing along the world-famous Redwood Route.

This Mendocino rail bike excursion will take you 25 miles far off the beaten path along the meandering Noyo River and deep into old-growth redwood groves, on a section of track now reserved exclusively for railbikes.

Begin your day at Skunk Train's Sherwood Road property with a scenic hike down through the redwoods to the Noyo River and the east end of Tunnel #1. You’ll get acquainted with your bikes and guides, and set off. Trips will be staggered by a few minutes so that you can enjoy the solitude of the route as you make your way 11 miles inland along the tranquil river.

You’ll pass South Fork, Ranch, Redwood Lodge, Grove, and other historic stops, crossing over 12 wooden trestle bridges that offer stunning views of the river below.

Pull into Camp Noyo and take an hour break, with a picnic and refreshments offered complimentary for your enjoyment. Take a swim in the river, relax, or stroll among the redwoods before setting off on your return.

Are there any age/physical/health/etc. restrictions for this activity?

This trip is lengthy and strenuous. You must be in good physical shape and able to walk a long distance (getting down to your bike and back up at the end, it’s 15 stories of hiking). Single riders must be at least 18 years of age. All passengers must be able to walk steep and rugged terrain and be at least 6+ years old. Maximum weight 250 pounds per passenger. Riders should be capable of bicycling recumbently for 30 minutes at low exertion. The rail bikes include an optional motorized assist to help anyone on any grade or simply to allow you to take a short breather during the ride.

What should I bring?

Bring water, insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat to avoid sunburn during the ride. Helmets are provided, however you may bring your own helmet if you wish. Bring a picture ID.

What should I wear?

Closed-toed shoes are required. Dress in casual sports attire and for the weather- including rain gear if need be. Dress in layers during the winter months as the area will be colder. Railbike tours operate rain or shine.

Is the activity appropriate for children?

All riders must be at least 6 years old, in good physical condition and able to walk a long distance.

Can I bring my camera?

Yes! There are many scenic views along this trip. Plus, there is no steering and riding is hands free, making it easy to take pictures and video along the way. Please note, drones are not permitted.
