If you are a football fan, you visit the NFL Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, or the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana. If you love country music, from Hank Williams and Roy Acuff to Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, you make a pilgrimage to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. Located at 222 Fifth Avenue South in downtown Nashville, the new 140,000-square-foot facility opened in May 2001, replacing the original building that opened in 1967. Modeled after the Baseball Hall of Fame, it unveiled a $100 million expansion in 2014, doubling its size to 350,000 square feet of galleries, archival storage, education classrooms, retail stores and special event space. It is the world's largest repository of country music artifacts, photographs, text panels, recorded sound, vintage video and interactive touchscreens. In addition, the three-story museum has a 776-seat CMA Theater and the Taylor Swift Education Center. Start with the core exhibition, Sing Me Back Home: A Journey Through Country Music, a history and the sounds of country music. Other historic properties include one of the country's oldest letterpress print shops and RCA Studio B, Nashville's oldest surviving recording studio which is located on nearly Music Row, where Hall of Famers Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings and many others were made. The centerpiece of the facility, of course, is the Hall of Fame, which was created in 1961. The bronze plaques form a special exhibit, the highest honor the country music field can bestow to performers, songwriters, broadcasters, musicians and executives in the profession. Over 900 musical instruments are on display, including Mother Maybelle Carter's Gibson L-5 guitar, Bob Wills' fiddle, Chet Akins' 1950 Angelico archtop guitar and Bill Monroe's mandolin. Also such iconic vehicles as Elvis Presley's 1960 Solid Gold Cadillac limousine, Webb Pierce's 1962 Pontiac Bonneville convertible and Jerry Reed's 1980 Pontiac Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit. Not to mention a replica of the distinctive diamond-shaped WSM radio tower that was originally built in 1932 south of Nashville and still is in operation and thousands of stage costumes, home-made cotton dresses, formal gowns, cowboy boots, hats and jeans.
