"Serious Management Issues at a Supposed 4-Star Marriott Property"
TripAdvisor user rating 1.0 out of 5

I’ve stayed here twice for business trips, and both times were extremely disappointing. The first stay, the AC in my room was broken. On this most recent visit, the toilet was broken and required three separate calls to maintenance before it was finally fixed. Having to repeatedly call for something so basic is unacceptable in any hotel, let alone one marketed as a 4-star. Several key amenities were also unavailable. The restaurant was under construction, and we weren’t told, even at check-in. The fitness center was closed, which we only discovered when we went to use it and saw it completely torn apart through the window. At no point did the hotel communicate this in advance or offer anything to offset the inconvenience. On top of that, construction on the 7th floor meant workers constantly using the elevators, leading to 10–15 minute waits every time, while the express elevator was out of service entirely. I made the hotel aware of these issues during both of my stays, yet nothing meaningful was ever done to address them. To me, this reflects poor management. After two stays with issues like this, I can’t understand how Marriott and Westin allow this property to carry a 4-star rating. We will not be staying here again.

"Not up to Westin standards!"

Having Titanium Elite status for Marriott Bonvoy, we travel often and experience many hotels. Recently, at the Westin Tampa Bay, we had our worst experience ever at an upscale hotel! The only good things about this experience were the great location on the Tampa Bay and the professional way the poised, friendly, competent front desk employee, TeAria, handled our many problems. Here is a list of the problems that made us wonder how this hotel can be accepted by Marriott as a Westin: 1) The hotel was completely taken over by a huge reunion group, which took priority over Bonvoy guests with high status (such as our Titanium Elite status). 2) Elevators smelled like marijuana. 3) Reunion guests were filling up all tables in temporary restaurant/bar area, just hanging out and not ordering food or drinks. (Restaurant and bar were being renovated.) 4) Previous to our stay, our room was upgraded, but then downgraded because the reunion group took priority. 5) Previous to our stay, we called and requested to talk to a manager and were told one would call us later. No manager called us. 6) At the hotel when we mentioned the problems, we were told a supervisor would talk to us. No supervisor or manager talked to us. 7) Our Nightly Upgrade Awards were denied because "reunion group had paid for all premium rooms." This was definitely not the experience we expected at a Westin! We stayed only about an hour and then checked out and went to another hotel in the area. The Tampa Airport Marriott, which we visit many times a year, cordially welcomed us at the last minute and provided a wonderful 3-night stay! We hope the Westin, with its lovely views of the Tampa Bay and its great location close to TPA airport, will get its act together soon.

"Room was great, staff and restaurant horrible!"

The hotel front desk staff were rude and unfriendly. It appeared that they did not want to be at work, never showed a smile, and appeared bothered that I even walked up to their desk for help since they had to put down their phone they were playing on. Upon check-in, they could not find my reservation and stated that I had to of booked at a different property even though I showed them proof of my reservation through the confirmation number in the app. They were finally able to find my reservation after arguing and said nothing other than here are the keys while rolling their eyes - no apology for the confusion or argument. The next morning, we headed for breakfast at Aqua which was also very underwhelming. To start cold coffee was brought to the table, with one cup having lipstick imprinted on one side as if the cup was unwashed. When requesting cream for the coffee, a grande sized plastic Starbucks cup full of milk was sat on the table with a single spoon for the entire table to share. Waters for the table were also served in grande sized plastic cups from Starbucks. For a restaurant serving $20 plates of breakfast this is simply unacceptable. After the underwhelming breakfast, we requested a late check out. The front desk staff, also appeared unhappy and said “yeah sure.” After leaving for the beach and returning to the room we found that our key had been disabled. The staff member said “you’re supposed to have checked out already.” Although that same staff member had extended the checkout time that same morning. Overall, the room was very nice which is the ONLY reason I gave it 2/5. If the staff doesn’t change and the restaurant receive major overhaul I couldn’t see myself staying at the property again.

Service is terrible. Had to call multiple times to the desk to get requested items. Housekeeping half cleaned the room. Front desk staff RUDE. Found a roach in my room. Will not stay at a Marriott property again.
