"Magical Holiday Experience at Hotel del Coronado Ice Rink"

Ice skating on the sand at the historic Hotel del Coronado is pure holiday magic. Skating under sparkling lights with the ocean breeze, festive music, and fireworks over the water was absolutely unforgettable. The setting is stunning and the energy is joyful from start to finish. Special thanks to Kaitlyn G. and her amazing team for their outstanding service. They went above and beyond to make sure our entire group had perfectly fitted, comfortable skates — even tracking down just-right sizes with a smile and great humor. Their care truly elevated the experience. A must-do holiday tradition in San Diego.

"Amazing historic hotel!"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5

Wow! This was an incredible two night stay. The history of this hotel jumps out at you as you approach the building. We were warmly welcomed at the front desk by Blair. She found the perfect room for us with a balcony view of the beautiful courtyard in the Victorian building. She also recognized my wife's birthday with a box of delicious chocolates.  The room in the Victorian building was newly renovated. Everything looked brand new including the furniture, TV, bathroom, all the doors and beautiful moldings, and balcony furniture.  And it was spotless. There's a K-Cup coffee maker and mini fridge in the room  The location right on the beach is amazing. There is seating available overlooking the beach as well as beach chairs for use on the beach. There is a paved path along the beach.  The common area of the hotel facing the ocean is beautiful! All the restaurants and shops are located in this area with a focus on outdoor space.  There are many food outlets. It's expensive as you would expect at a luxury resort. But there are some reasonably priced options also at the taco shack on the beach and the market that sells breakfast items, sandwiches and pizza.

"Poor Service Execution Mars Otherwise Great Stay"
TripAdvisor user rating 3 out of 5
Reviewed December 03, 2025 NEW
Hotel management dropped the ball on a great otherwise stay. We self parked. Parking is tight. Check in was an ease and our luggage was in our room in the Views quickly. The grounds are fantastic this time of year, but the hotel becomes busy each night as people come to see the trees and light show. Ice skating was awesome by the way. We didn’t get to try surfing because of worries on water pollution, which stunk. My wife did register for a spin class, but was told the wrong locational and no one in the resort could point her in the proper direction. She missed more than 10 minutes of a paid class. Lack of execution will be a theme by some team members. The wait staff at the hotel and restaurants are wonderful and we enjoyed the shopping experience too. Food and drink prices are typical of high end resorts, but the markups on wine would make a NYC steakhouse blush. Poor to average wine that retails for $20-$30 should never be marked up 5x+ to $100-$200 a bottle. It’s shameful. The Laundry Room is a great place to watch NFL games, but it only feels partially complete and is something to refresh over the winter. Our room had great views, was clean and extremely quiet. We never heard any hallway noise. However, the problem is our room had a strange smell. We called about it 1st thing after night one and said the bathroom had a sewer gas smell (we kept the doors shut as a result). The hotel sent someone up and they bleached the drains. The smell came back. We called again. We have no idea if anyone checked again. Yet when a manager finally called me, it was approaching 8pm and we were getting ready to put our kids to bed since we were leaving the next morning. The offer was $100 credit and nothing more, which stinks given the amount spent on rooms and at the resort over the Thanksgiving holiday. A penny wise, pound foolish move - the hotel staff should read Unreasonable Hospitality . We weren’t able to change rooms given the timing. There was a general lack of urgency, which is utterly disappointing and really makes me ponder returning. A great location,a good time but the management team left a 20 year Hilton loyalist highly disappointed.

"Overpriced for what you get."
TripAdvisor user rating 2 out of 5

I decided to splurge on an ocean view villa at the Shore House for Thanksgiving weekend. When we checked into our room, we discovered that you really couldn't see the ocean because it was on the ground floor. We looked out onto the pool, which was extremely crowded, so there was little privacy and no views. I spoke to the front desk, who were very friendly and said there were no other rooms available, but that they could move us to the room above for the next two nights. So, we inconveniently had to move all of our stuff the next day, although they did allow us to stay in our current room until the other room was vacant. The second room was much better, but I had to ask for them to make up the sleeper sofa twice and it wasn't completed until 10pm. The second day we had to request housekeeping. The room was very expensive, at over $2000 per night, so I would have thought that the housekeeping and service would have been top-notch, but I had to ask for everything and then wait. We also booked our Thanksgiving meal at the Ocean Ballroom. I expected for the outrageous price to have an elegant dinner for my family. Instead, we walked into a room with a loud band, bright lights, picked over buffet, and kids running around. I felt like I was at a casino buffet. Utterly disappointing. On top of that, the service wasn't great. Overall, we enjoyed the ambience of the hotel and the proximity to the beach, but I doubt I'll go again. There are less expensive options with better service.

"Skate by the Sea life risking experience!"
TripAdvisor user rating 2 out of 5
Reviewed December 01, 2025 NEW
Hotel Del Coronado is stunning at Christmas and well worth the visit. However their Skate by the Sea experience was not a great as it was led to believe. The ice was not maintained well, pools of water made it difficult to move through and it was so crowded it was dangerous. Rude individuals who knew how to skate shoved past those who were novices. Zero crowd control. We feel we wasted $100 as a couple for zero satisfaction. Life risking experience, not worth it.
